Why Cuddle Cushions Are Terrible

Why Cuddle Cushions Are Terrible

Cuddle cushions have become a popular addition to many homes, offering a cosy, oversized alternative to traditional seating. Designed for maximum comfort, they offer a perfect hug which wraps around you, making them a favourite for movie nights, reading, or simply lounging.

But despite their appeal, they come with an unexpected downside—everyone in the house will fight over who gets to sit in it.

What Exactly Is a Cuddle Cushion?

A cuddle cushion is essentially a large, plush seating option designed to mould to your body. Unlike a traditional cushion on the bed or couch, it offers a more relaxed and adaptable way to sit (or sprawl).

Depending on the type, these cushions can be used as an extra comfort in your living area, a cosy spot for cuddling up, or even for snuggling into and napping.

My particular cuddle cushion was from Dunelm, and I can’t fault it. Made from a soft, Teddy fabric, it’s warm and cuddly - perfect for lazy, cosy evenings.

The Benefits of a Cuddle Cushion

Despite their flaws (which we’ll get to), cuddle cushions have a lot going for them:

Ultimate Comfort – These cushions offer unmatched cosiness, making them a great addition to any living space.
Versatility – They can be used in the living room, bedroom, gaming area, or even a home office for a relaxed seating option.
Perfect for Two (In Theory) – Some are designed to accommodate two people, making them a great spot for couples or families to snuggle up together.
Aesthetic Appeal – Available in various fabrics, colours, and shapes, they can add a stylish, modern, or bohemian touch to a room.

The Problem No One Talks About

For all their benefits, cuddle cushions come with a major downside: they’re too comfortable. Once you have one, everyone in the house will want it. Whether it’s your partner, roommate, pet, or child, the competition over who gets to sit in the cuddle cushion can quickly become an ongoing battle.

Sharing seems like a good idea in theory, but in practice, it’s not always that simple. Someone inevitably gets the better spot, while the other person ends up awkwardly trying to squeeze in. And if you think you’ll get a turn later, don’t count on it—once someone claims the cushion, they’re not giving it up easily.

The Solution?

You could buy another one, but then you risk turning your home turning into a sea of oversized cushions. Or, you could accept that the cuddle cushion will always be the most sought-after seat in the house and prepare for a daily game of “who gets there first.”

So, are cuddle cushions terrible? Not really. But if you get one, just be ready for the competition that comes with it.
